Over its 100-year existence, the chapel at Mount St. Mary’s University went through many patchwork repairs and alterations. By the time a multi-phase restoration began in 2010, poor records had left some of the original details lost to history. The design team sought to highlight the remaining historic fabric, accentuate the grandeur of the space and reestablish a cohesive identity for the chapel.
Phased improvements included a new color scheme, decorative painting, lighting design, integration of new mechanical and sound systems, and improvements to accessibility. Additionally, a new marble tile floor was installed, inspired by the discovery of photos from the 1930s. Upon completion, the Monsignor believed the chapel had become grander and more beautiful than when it was originally constructed.
