CARBON CHALENGE BALTIMORE
GRAND PRIZE – CARBON CHALLENGE
Baltimore, MD | APA Design Competition
For the Carbon Challenge, designers were asked to create an infill development of eight new rowhouses on a vacant block in Baltimore’s Oliver neighborhood, and to test their work against software that analyzed the design’s total carbon footprint.
Phillip Jones’s winning entry combined stabilized rammed-earth party walls with engineered wood framing to create a new take on traditional rowhouse construction. The result was energy-efficient, midsized homes with ample daylight, generous rooms, and modern amenities such as open stairs and walk-out roof decks.
